Serious question!

I was looking for some support here. Over the holidays, I got into a discussion (disagreement?) with a family member. When he talks about himself, he is always referring to himself as a "former marine". i.e. "As a former marine, I know that...".

My question is, do you think it's okay to refer to yourself as a former marine? I always had the impression that once someone became a marine, they were always one! So calling oneself a Former marine is a misnomer. I have friends that are marines, and they would never refer to themselves as a former marine, or ex-marine.
