Turkey prefers diplomacy in solving Iran nuclear row: PM

March 9, 2010

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that his country prefers diplomacy in solving a row on Iran's nuclear program, terming Iran as an "important country in the region."

"We support dialogue and diplomacy in solution of the problem about Iran's nuclear program," Erdogan was quoted by Turkish Anatolia news agency as telling reporters in Riyadh.

"Iran should be given the right of having civil nuclear energy with peaceful means," said the Turkish premier who is visiting the Saudi capital to receive King Faisal International Prize for service to Islam.

Western countries are currently pushing for extra sanctions against Iran, which announced last month it started the process of producing 20 percent enriched uranium inside the country. In response to the move, U.S. President Barack Obama said his administration would develop "a significant regime of sanctions" targeting Iran.

The West has accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian program. Iran has denied the accusation and says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.
